Stochastic model of gene expression

Abstract


Gene expression is a process by which the information from a gene is used to synthesize proteins. It is considered that the process is inherently stochastic.

First models were constructed under the assumption that during transcription event, single mRNA molecule is produced. However, it is more likely that production of mRNA occurs in random bursts of many molecules. This was proposed by J.M. Pedraza and J. Paulsson in Effects of Molecular Memory and Bursting on Fluctuations in Gene Expression (Science 319(2008), 339-343).

During the talk, this general model will be considered. We will express relationship between number of mRNA and protein molecules in terms of stochastic processes. This will be the starting point for further analysis.
